On Friday evening 11th June 2010, sixty members and friends of the Wiltshire South Trefoil Guilds descended on the Jubilee Hall in Bratton to celebrate 100 years of Guiding, with a 1940’s theme.

An array of clothing appropriate to the era was worn by members, beautiful dresses, hats, army uniforms, overalls and turbans! The supper tables were decorated with Union flags, Ration books were provided for everyone in order to claim the buffet meal, and the raffle prizes represented the austerity of the age. Two Guild members related stories of ‘When mother was a Guide’ and music for the evening was provided by the ‘In the Mood’ group, courtesy of Mr Jim Banks, followed by some hectic dancing after the meal.

At times during the evening we were alerted to ‘Air raids’, including an ARP riding his bicycle through the hall, and one active Trefoil Guild member dived under the table in terror! Two soldiers gave a rendition of the song ‘Green Grass’ and ‘Spivs’ circulated the hall trying to sell their wares.

A cake to celebrate 100 years of Guiding was cut by Val Whitcombe, a member of the Jubilee Hall Committee, who was celebrating her birthday, and Eve Banks, Hilperton Guider, presented a cake to Marie Nunn, thanking her for all her help with Guiding, for all ages, over the past years. The evening closed with a rousing rendition of Land of Hope and Glory, Taps and the National Anthem. Mrs Christine Frowde, Wiltshire South Trefoil Guild Chairman, thanked the Band, the Jubilee Players, members of the Jubilee Hall Committee and Marie, Sandy and Lin for arranging the evening. Definitely a night to remember!

The following day it was announced that Mrs Marie Nunn, had been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to Guiding, the Royal British Legion, her local Community and the County Fostering service. Sincere congratulations from all her friends.
